Cancer Prevention Month: How Insurance Supports Your Health Journey

Written by RMC Group | Feb 5, 2025 1:15:00 PM

Cancer Prevention Month is an important time to educate ourselves on healthy habits for cancer prevention and early detection. With proactive measures and the right insurance coverage, individuals can take charge of their health and improve their chances of preventing or detecting cancer early.

The Role of Health Insurance in Cancer Prevention

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates that most health insurance plans cover cancer prevention services without cost-sharing. These include essential screenings, medications, and counseling. Having health insurance significantly increases the likelihood that individuals will receive preventive care, ultimately reducing the risk of being diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer. Covered services include:

  • Mammograms: Recommended annually from age 40 and every two years after age 50. Earlier screenings, including MRIs, may be necessary for those with a family history of breast cancer.
  • Colonoscopies: The recommended age for a first colonoscopy has been revised from 50 to 45, with screenings every 5-10 years depending on history and risk factors. Alternative screening methods include CT Colonography, Fecal Immunochemical Testing, and Cologuard testing.
  • Pap Testing: Women should begin Pap testing between ages 20-21, with screenings every three years. After age 30, HPV and Pap testing are recommended every five years.
  • CT Scans for Lung Cancer: Annual low-dose CT scans are recommended for individuals aged 50-80 who smoke or previously smoked.
  • Behavioral Counseling for Skin Cancer: Encourages protective measures against sun exposure, including sunscreen use, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding tanning beds.
  • Genetic Counseling: Helps assess inherited risks for conditions like breast cancer.
  • Immunizations: Protect against viruses linked to cancer, such as HPV and Hepatitis B.
  • Nutritional Counseling, Obesity Screening, and Smoking Cessation Programs: Aid in reducing cancer risk through healthier lifestyle choices.

Lifestyle Choices That Help Prevent Cancer

In addition to regular screenings, certain lifestyle habits can lower the risk of cancer:

  • Avoid Tobacco: Smoking is linked to various cancers, including lung, mouth, throat, and kidney cancer. Exposure to secondhand smoke or chewing tobacco can also increase cancer risk.
  • Eat a Healthy Diet: While no diet guarantees cancer prevention, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while limiting processed foods and alcohol can lower the risk.
  • Maintain a Healthy Weight and Stay Active: Obesity is associated with several cancers, including breast, colon, and pancreatic cancer.
  • Sun Protection: Skin cancer is one of the most common but also one of the most preventable types of cancer. Reduce sun exposure, wear protective clothing, and use SPF 30+ sunscreen.
  • Get Vaccinated: Protect against Hepatitis B and HPV, which are linked to liver and cervical cancer.
  • Regular Medical Checkups: Routine screenings and self-exams increase the likelihood of early detection.

Insurance Coverage for Cancer Treatment Support

Health insurance not only helps with preventive care but also supports individuals undergoing cancer treatment. Long-term care insurance (LTCI), Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and other programs can assist with caregiving and transportation costs. Despite these options, fewer than 3% of Americans have LTCI policies, which can cover services such as:

  • Adult day care services
  • Home modifications
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Compensation for family members providing care
  • Transportation services for medical appointments and errands

Additionally, nonprofit organizations, like the Cancer Alliance Network (CAN), provide financial support to families facing cancer treatment. RMC Group proudly supports CAN through its annual golf tournament, raising thousands of dollars to assist families with rent, groceries, and utilities.
